Pictures at an Exhibition brings a long interest in street photography - particularly its focus on a fleeting human moment composed within the abstract geometry of an urban space - into art museums and public monuments.  The trigger for making a photograph is most often a visitor captivated by a work of art framed within a “set” created by the light, color, and architecture of a curated space. Just as a well-designed stage mirrors the inner life of the actor, these photographs attempt to compose a still, abstract space that reveals and respects the emotional experience of museum visitors as they slowly witness powerful works of art.   Two recent exhibitions at the Met in New York City – Irving Penn’s centennial show and the Michelangelo exhibition – have been particularly compelling both in their spatial design and in the reverence they have evoked from their audience.
